Présentation par les organisateurs :

Critics of liberal representative democracy often point to populist movements and movements such as Occupy, the indignados and the Yellow Vests as proof that we need to and can move beyond representative democracy. 

Defenders of liberal representative democracy point to populists and street protesters as potential threats to democracy. The speakers will discuss the relationship between populism, protest and democracy in the context of the Yellow Vest movement: what are the implications of this movement for French democracy? Is it populist, and, if so, how does this interact with populist political parties? Is it possible for a movement to be effective without being co-opted by the state? Intervenants : 

• Professor Lasse Thomassen. Lasse Thomassen is Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University of London. His research focuses on three areas: debates within radical democratic theory and radical politics (autonomy vs hegemony, movement parties, etc.); identity politics and the politics of inclusion, particularly in the context of the UK and Europe; and new approaches to the concept of representation. Cutting across these research foci Lasse Thomassen is interested in developing deconstruction and discourse theory as methods for political analysis.
• Thomás Zicman de Barros. Thomás Zicman is a PhD candidate in Political Theory at the CEVIPOF – Sciences Po. His research focuses on interdisciplinary connections between Political Theory and Psychoanalysis, studying pre-populist protest movements and the role of affects in the construction of collective identities.
• Professor Anna-Louise Milne. Anna-Louise Milne is Professor of French and Comparative Literature and Director of Research at the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP). She is also the convenor of the MA in Urban History and Culture. Her work spans contemporary literary and urban studies, and she writes across fiction, activist interventions and academic criticism in English and French.
