Panel proposals for a new section at the ECPR Innsbruck General Conference 2020: ‘(Geo)Political Transformations in the Mediterranean’, co-convened by Dr Sarah Wolff (Queen Mary University of London) and Professor Frédéric Volpi (The University of Edinburgh).

Scholars are invited to submit panel proposals on the theme of (Geo)Political Transformations in the Mediterranean. We are particularly looking to invite research on the following topics (but not exclusively):

  • What is specific to the social movements that are emerging/ continuing in the Mediterranean?
  • How are states responding to the demands of such movements – e.g. in Algeria and Lebanon?
  • Can we identify new forms of ‘Mediterranean Islamism’?
  • How can we explain the persistence of authoritarianism in the Southern Mediterranean after the Arab uprisings?
  • How can we explain the role of the youth, migrants and the socially marginalized in protest movements and migratory fluxes?
  • To what extent is it possible to reconceptualize the centres-peripheries relations in the Mediterranean?
  • What are the new challenges for gender in the Mediterranean?

This ECPR section is part of the ECPR Mediterranean Politics and Society Research Network (MEDNET). The deadline for the submission of panel proposals is 19 February 2020. The conference will take place at the University of Innsbruck, Austria on 26-28 August 2020. For more information, click here.
