The Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture, where our Centre for International Relations Research is located, has advertised three PhD positions, for four years, starting in September 2019. Funded applicants will receive a salary of €2,325 gross per month in the first year, and this will grow to €2,972 in the fourth year. There is also some funding for research travel.
To be eligible candidates need to have a completed masters degree and obtain the support of one of the supervisors in our areas of expertise (please see exact requirements in the call).
Research areas:Our research centre is organised through five research groups and we welcome applications on all of them.
- History and Theory of European Integration. Contact persons: Prof. dr. Jan van der Harst (j.van.der.harst@rug.nl), Prof. dr. Ronald Holzhacker (r.l.holzhacker@rug.nl)Themes: current and future challenges for the EU focusing on policy and decision making and institutional development, democracy, legitimacy and human rights; and changes in the relationship between the EU and (South)-East Asia.
- International Political Economy. Contact person: Prof. dr. Herman Hoen (h.w.hoen@rug.nl)Themes: Groningen IPE focuses on institutional change around two key themes. Convergence in relation to changes in trade, investment and labour regimes (mostly between Europe and the United States but not exclusively), and transformation and integration in transitions to market economies embedded in democratic orders in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
- History and Theory of International Relations.Contact person: Prof. dr. Luis Lobo-Guerrero (l.e.lobo-guerrero@rug.nl)Themes: the politics of global connectivities in international relations; the study of modes of reasoning about order, power and governance; and historical international relations.
- International Relations and Security Studies. Contact person: Prof. dr. Jaap de Wilde (j.h.de.wilde@rug.nl) Themes: critical security studies, security and geopolitics, energy security, health security, visual security, urban security, Arctic security.
- Globalisation Studies and Humanitarian Action. Contact person: Prof. dr. mr. Tjalling Halbertsma (t.h.f.halbertsma@rug.nl) Themes: impact of globalisation on all areas of human and institutional interaction with special attention to processes of international development and international humanitarian action.
